Champions League preview
This season’s Champions League has already seen upsets, with Ajax, Napoli and Marseille amongst the teams unable reach the knockout stages, while Real Madrid and PSG head the European giants forced into the playoff round. Although the pair appear likely to reach the round of 16, the prospects of Juventus and Inter look far bleaker, after suffering first leg defeats to Galatasaray and Bodo/Glimt respectively. Is this set to be an embarrassing week for Serie A’s finest? We’ve previewed some of this week’s Champions League fixtures to help you decide what to bet on once your new William Hill account is set up.
Atletico Madrid vs Club Brugge (Tuesday 5.45pm)
Atletico Madrid controlled large spells of the first leg but ultimately failed to preserve their advantage. Back on home soil, however, they will expect a different outcome, and Diego Simeone’s side look well placed to capitalise on home advantage and secure the victory.
Their record at the Metropolitano in the Champions League underlines that confidence. Since the start of the 2022/23 campaign, Atletico have lost just two of their 17 home matches in the competition, winning 13 of them. Across that run they have averaged 2.29 goals per game while conceding just over one per match, demonstrating both attacking efficiency and defensive resilience.
The arrival of Ademola Lookman has added further sharpness in the final third, making Atletico a more potent attacking force. That increased firepower should reduce the likelihood of a repeat of their previous home setback in Europe, when they somehow lost to Bodo/Glimt despite registering 16 more shots than their opponents.
Club Brugge’s away form in the league phase does little to inspire confidence. Their only victory on the road came against bottom-placed Kairat Almaty, and they were beaten in all three away fixtures in which they started as underdogs in the match winner market, conceding nine goals across those matches.
Inter Milan vs Bodo/Glimt (Tuesday 8pm)
Inter face a significant challenge if they are to reach the last 16 after falling two goals behind in the first leg. Even so, Cristian Chivu still has considerable quality within his squad, and the Nerazzurri should at least be capable of winning on the night, even if overturning the aggregate scoreline proves tougher.
Their home form this season provides encouragement. Inter have suffered just four defeats in 19 matches at San Siro across all competitions, with those losses coming against strong opposition in Arsenal, Liverpool, Milan and Udinese. During that stretch they have averaged 2.58 goals per game, underlining the attacking threat they carry and suggesting they have the firepower required to trouble Bodo/Glimt.
The visitors’ recent European away record also points in Inter’s favour. Bodo/Glimt have managed just one win in their last ten away fixtures in continental competition, losing six and conceding an average of two goals per game. When heavily unfancied on their travels in Europe, they have also struggled; the last time they were priced above 10.00 in the 1×2 market away from home, they were beaten 3-1 by Tottenham. They are currently available at around 11.00 to win this match, which reflects the scale of the task facing them.
Atlanta vs Dortmund (Wednesday 5.45pm)
Dortmund walk into the second leg against Atalanta with a 2-0 lead. However, they will face a more challenging fixture at New Balance Arena. All they have to do is hold out and not lose by two goals. With this in mind, expect a close game from the Germans, making the draw a valuable pick.
Atalanta tied nine games domestically this season, but have drawn just two of their last 10 competitive games.
The Prussians have failed to win three of their last four away European matches, losing to Tottenham and City, while drawing 4-4 with Juventus. Their draw with another Italian side adds value to the draw pick here.
The most recent matches played at Bergamo between these two sides ended in a 1-1 draw.
Atalanta offered some positives in the reverse fixture, and we expect more of the same at home. Despite the draw not working out for them, La Dea doesn’t seem capable of getting a clear win despite winning the last four home matches across all competitions.
Juventus vs Galatasaray (Wednesday 8pm)
Juventus were well beaten in the first leg and face an uphill battle in the tie, but the return fixture presents a different scenario. With Galatasaray holding a three-goal aggregate advantage, the Turkish side have little incentive to chase the game, which could shift the dynamic in favour of the hosts. Backed by home support, Juventus look capable of at least claiming a win on the night, making the 1×2 market appealing for the Italian side.
Galatasaray’s recent away record in European competition offers further encouragement for the home team. They have managed just one victory in their last 13 away matches in either the Champions League or Europa League, losing nine of those games. During that stretch they have averaged 1.15 goals scored per match while conceding 2.23, highlighting defensive vulnerabilities on their travels. Notably, they have lost all five away fixtures in which they were priced above 3.00 in the 1×2 market.
Juventus, meanwhile, have been strong at home under Luciano Spalletti, suffering only one defeat in 12 competitive matches and winning seven. Across their last ten home games, they have averaged 2.1 goals per match, suggesting they possess the attacking quality required to overcome Galatasaray, even if the aggregate deficit ultimately proves decisive.

Liverpool and Chelsea can’t be discounted either, while Bayern Munich and PSG are likely to be the biggest obstacles to an English Champions League winner.
