Warrior Wade to leave Wessel running on empty
James Wade’s love affair with Blackpool shows no sign of ending any time soon, and that spells danger for Wessel Nijman in round two of the World Matchplay.
Wade brought the Empress Ballroom to its feet on Saturday by kicking off the tournament with a stunning 10-3 demolition of Joe Cullen.
The Machine averaged 104.4 and missed just five of 15 doubles. It was almost flawless from a player who seems to save his best tungsten for the Winter Gardens.
He will have to repeat that effort against young Dutch prospect Wessel Nijman in Tuesday night’s opening round-two contest but there is every reason to believe he can.
After all, this is a man who has won this tournament before, reached five more finals and is throwing beautifully and, critically, scoring heavily.
This is Nijman’s debut and he made quite the entrance beating Nathan Aspinall 10-6. He also averaged over 100 and was almost as clinical as Wade on the outer ring, connecting with 10 of 16 attempts.
The difference, however, is that Wade is metronomic in that department. If Nijman’s finishing dips at all, however, the Englishman gets up and the seeded player gets the nod.

Dutch aces to give treble 20 bed a hiding
Gian van Veen stole the Night One headlines in Blackpool by ousting reigning champion and world No.1 Luke Humphries 10-8 in a nerveless display.
That has earned him the status of favourite against his more experienced compatriot Danny Noppert, who did all that was necessary to eliminate stage-struck Cameron Menzies 10-2.
Noppert will certainly be forced to play more than 12 legs against Van Veen – it’s now best-of-21, up from best-of-19 – and we can expect a barrage of 180s from these superstars.
Van Veen lobbed in eight against Humphries, Noppert five against Menzies so between them expect to soar past 12.5 maximums.

Bullet can derail Flying Scotsman in titanic clash
Stephen Bunting’s greater consistency and restored confidence can give The Bullet a decisive edge in his mouth-watering showdown against Gary Anderson.
Both were impressive winners in round one, Bunting beating Ryan Joyce 10-8.
Earlier, Anderson had been locked in a real gritty dust-up with Luke Woodhouse before reeling off five legs in a row to win 10-5.
Anderson’s finishing was peerless, his scoring less so, and that is where Bunting will have an advantage.
Bunting, a multiple winner this year, banged in 10 180s and 14 140s against Joyce – that’s 12 more scores in excess of 140 than Ando managed, yet over only two legs more.
If Bunting wins this then it follows he does so having nailed more 180s.
