No stopping Wade in pursuit of more Blackpool glory
The James Wade roadshow is having a summer season to remember in Blackpool – and not for the first time.
The former Matchplay winner and five-time runner-up has a love affair with the Winter Gardens which stands him apart from anyone else left in the field.
He may be 42 now and something of an elder statesman in a young man’s game, but he can still throw tungsten like few others when he’s at his best.
And he’s been at his best this week, seeing off Joe Cullen 10-3 and Wessel Nijman 11-5 in round two, and he probably should not be the outsider against Gian van Veen in the last eight.
Van Veen, of course, wrote the opening-night headlines when he held it together to topple reigning champion and world No.1 Luke Humphries 10-8.
And he played well again to take care of Danny Noppert in round two, running out a routine 11-5 victor.
But it’s Wade’s finishing, especially under pressure, that stands the left-hander apart, as he boasted a 67 percent checkout rate against Cullen and 65 against Nijman.
Those are phenomenal numbers over long distances and he just doesn’t look like missing doubles 20 or 10.
Scoring for show, doubles for dough, the old adage goes and no one has made a career adhering to that mantra quite as successfully as Wade. And he’s not done yet.

Bullet’s doubling disquiet could be a gift for Clayton
James Wade might be hitting every double he looks at, but Stephen Bunting is definitely not and he has gotten this far in the tournament thanks to the poor finishing of others.
Bunting only hit 36 percent of his doubles when scraping past Ryan Joyce 10-8 and an even less impressive 28 percent as he pipped Gary Anderson 12-10 in a disjointed second-round duel.
Sooner or later the Bullet’s misfires on the outer ring are going to cause his downfall, and maybe that night comes on Thursday when he toes the oche with Jonny Clayton.
Clayton has also been involved in a couple of almighty scraps against Euro raiders Martin Schindler and Mike De Decker.

Big hitters can pile up big scores in Bet Builder bonanza
Bunting’s finishing might be questionable and Clayton’s not always that much better, but both men can score big.
Bunting has hit 10 and eight maximums in his two matches to date, Clayton eight and nine.
And the potential to go higher than that is obvious with games in the quarter-finals over a best-of-31 legs.
That each man can clear 7.5 maximums looks hard to dispute and throw in at least a trio of ton-plus finishes to get an odds-against treble.
