Ebor Festival Day 1 Betting tips
Delacroix and Ombudsman were first and second respectively in the Eclipse at Sandown and they are set to lock horns once again in the Juddmonte International.
Our expert has a trio of selections to follow across the card and they include an Aidan O’Brien-trained horse in the big race of the day.
2.25 York – Italy
Aidan O’Brien has a particularly good crop of two-year-olds this season and the yard has been particularly successful with Wootton Bassett progeny. He runs ITALY here and he has produced a fair level of form already.
Victorious over this trip on debut at Leopardstown, that form looks rock-solid as the runner-up has won a Listed contest since. The front two were well clear of the rest and Italy began to assert his dominance approaching the line.
It’s no surprise that connections decided to step him significantly up in grade next time and he ran in the Group 2 Superlative Stakes. He was a little keen early on and was carried across the track at a key stage but ran well to finish second under the circumstances.
Dropping into a Group 3 here, victory could be on the cards with some better luck in-running. He brings the best momentum to the table and is therefore the one to beat, even though the form of Distant Storm’s maiden success has worked out very well.

3.00 York – Stay True
Derby winner Lambourn heads the field but the twice-raced STAY TRUE gets 5lb from his stablemate and retains a significant amount of potential. The son of Galileo made a good impression when winning a 1m2f maiden easily at Leopardstown on debut.
He pulled two-and-a-quarter lengths clear of the runner-up and a couple of subsequent winners have come out of the race. Trainer Aidan O’Brien sent him over to Lingfield for a Derby Trial and he wasn’t beaten far, finishing second.
Stay True has been given plenty of time to get over that and as he’s so lightly raced, there’s almost limitless scope for further improvement.

3.35 York – Delacroix
DELACROIX was a fairly useful juvenile but he has taken his form to a whole new level this season. Starting off in a couple of 1m2f Derby trials at Leopardstown, he won both in very convincing fashion, which made his performance in the Derby all the more perplexing.
It was a much-improved display upon his return to 1m2f in the Eclipse at Sandown last time out and he benefitted from a Ryan Moore masterclass, who delivered him with a late run to catch Ombudsman on the line.
The two face off once again and there’s clearly not much between them, but the three-year-old is expected to confirm the form.
