Ascot British Champions Day Betting Tips
The Champion Stakes (4.05pm) looks like a real firecracker, with Ombudsman, Delacroix and Calandagan headlining, and we’ve previewed all seven races on the card at Ascot (12:55-4:40). Here are our tips and all the odds for our selected runners. It promises to be a great day of racing, so make sure you get involved!
12:55 – Qipco British Champions Long Distance Cup (Group 1, 2m)
TRAWLERMAN won the Gold Cup here in June and has since added the Lonsdale Cup at York on his only run. The 2023 winner of this race, he was third behind Kyprios last year and, with that outstanding rival now retired, John & Thady Gosden’s charge should prove too good for these younger rivals.
1.30 – Qipco British Champions Day Two-Year-Old Conditions Stakes (6f)
A new addition to the Champions Day offering this year. WORDS OF TRUTH won a Group 2 at Newbury last month and the Charlie Appleby-trained son of Lope De Vega has a clear advantage on ratings on these rivals after winning all three starts since his debut. Meeting inferior opposition on level terms, he just needs an even share of the luck.
2.05 – Qipco British Champions Sprint Stakes (Group 1, 6f)
A wide open sprint in which Lazzat is entitled to big respect. He won over C&D at the Royal meeting but was denied last time in Haydock’s Sprint Cup by Big Mojo. Irish raider KING CUAN ran a career-best behind Art Power – winner of this is 2023 – and Paddy Twomey’s four-year-old is one that can go well for each-way players at a decent price.

2.45 – Qipco British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes (Fillies’ & Mares’ Group 1, 1m4f)
Last year’s winner KALPANA has enjoyed a solid season despite being winless in five outings. She has clashed with some exceptional colts along the way and her second here over C&D behind Calandagan in July is a strong form line. If her Arc run hasn’t left a mark, she looks the one to be with over a track and trip she relishes, with first-time cheekpieces now deployed under Colin Keane.
3.25 – Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (Group 1, 1m)
The Field Of Gold that won here in the summer will take some stopping, but the Kingman colt was disappointing in the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood and has something to prove at a short price now.
ROSALLION, meanwhile, is a model of consistency and made some eye-catching late progress last time at Longchamp, just failing to get up. Richard Hannon’s Irish Classic winner is very much proven over course and distance and gets the nod.

4.05 – Qipco Champion Stakes (Group 1, 1m2f)
An absolute belter in store as Ombudsman and Delacroix meet for the third time this season, with the scores level. They are major players and hard to separate, while Calandagan won the King George here last time in July and is a huge contender as the French seek another success in this race.
ALMERIC is the least exposed runner and a rapidly improving sort for Andrew Balding. He left some useful rivals flailing in last month’s Listed win at Ayr and merits a crack in elite company. He’s an each-way contender for Oisin Murphy on the day he collects his fifth jockeys’ title.
4.40 – Balmoral Handicap (1m)
It doesn’t get any easier with the sole handicap on the card rounding proceedings off. A daughter of Harry Angel, ARISAIG typically likes to be played late putting her turn of foot to good use. Charlie Johnston’s four-year-old just failed to get up in the Celebration Mile at Goodwood in August and was only denied very late in the Listed race at Newmarket in her last two starts. Jamie Spencer is back on board and he rides this straight mile ever so well. He could be flashing home best of all.
