EFL Cup holders should come out on top in lively tie
Newcastle needed a late strike from Bruno Guimaraes to seal Saturday’s 2-1 Premier League home win over Fulham and they can claim another entertaining victory against Tottenham in the EFL Cup fourth round.
The Magpies ended their long wait for a major trophy by winning this competition last season, knocking out top-flight sides Nottingham Forest, Chelsea, Brentford and Arsenal before beating Liverpool 2-1 in the final.
Newcastle have suffered dramatic home defeats to Liverpool and Arsenal in the league this term, also losing 2-1 to Barcelona in the Champions League.
However, Eddie Howe’s men are worth backing to beat Spurs with both teams scoring at St James’ Park on Wednesday.
Both of last season’s league meetings between these clubs ended in 2-1 victories for the Magpies and Tottenham have been scoring freely away from home, winning at Manchester City, West Ham, Leeds and Everton.
But Spurs were fortunate in their 2-1 victory at Elland Road, which came between disappointing Champions League draws away to Bodo/Glimt and Monaco, and they may struggle to derail Newcastle’s trophy defence on Wednesday.

Back Barnes to seize opportunity for Magpies
Newcastle’s wingers have been in good goalscoring form recently with Anthony Gordon starring in the Champions League and Jacob Murphy breaking the deadlock against Fulham on Saturday.
Harvey Barnes came on as a second-half substitute against the Cottagers, but manager Howe is likely to shuffle his pack in the EFL Cup, so the former Leicester man may well start in Newcastle’s front three.
Barnes came off the bench to set up a goal for William Osula in the 4-1 EFL Cup win over Bradford and he has scored three times in just 106 minutes of Champions League action this season.
He claimed nine league goals in 2024-25, despite starting only 17 times, and is an eye-catching price to open the scoring against Tottenham.

Impressive Sarr could star in Spurs midfield
Six of Newcastle’s eight home matches in all competitions have had over 2.5 goals and the exceptions were low-scoring wins over Premier League strugglers Wolves and Nottingham Forest.
Tottenham can contribute to the goal tally at St James’ Park and their lively wide players should cause problems for Dan Burn.
Lewis Hall is still struggling with an injury so Burn may start at left-back again and the England international has committed 17 fouls in nine league appearances this term.
Complete the Bet Builder by backing Tottenham midfielder Pape Sarr to have two or more shots at St James’ Park.
Sarr has been given more licence to get forward under Thomas Frank. He scored after coming on as a late sub in Sunday’s 3-0 win at Everton, having also notched in his most recent league start at West Ham.
