The rollercoaster that is the next Rangers manager market has taken its biggest twist yet, as Steven Gerrard is back as favourite to make a sensational return to Ibrox.
The odds for Gerrard to be reappointed at Rangers had shortened to 1/8 over the weekend, but he was thought to have decided the time wasn’t right. This left the Rangers board looking at alternatives, as Gerrard’s odds drifted right out to 16/1 as recently as Tuesday.
Betting sites have since been forced to cut Gerrard’s odds on multiple occasions, with the man who guided Rangers to the Scottish Premiership title in 2020/21 now incredibly reinstalled as favourite.

Ahead of Russell Martin’s departure, it had been Gerrard and Sean Dyche who were the favourites to take charge. Dyche’s appointment appeared logical, given he previously worked with Sporting Director Kevin Thelwell in his time at Everton. Together, they navigated financial challenges and points deductions at Goodison Park, but UK betting sites like Betano have now pushed Dyche’s odds down to 33/1 in their Rangers manager betting odds.
The new week started with former Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl as the odds-on favourite with betting sites. The 36-year-old German impressed at Sheffield Wednesday under trying circumstances and would be seen as a more progressive appointment than the likes of Sean Dyche.
Tuesday saw Kevin Muscat overtake his rivals at the head of the betting, but it’s now Steven Gerrard who again leads the race to be appointed as Russell Martin’s successor.

Who are the favourites to be next Rangers manager?
If this season’s results weren’t emotionally draining enough for Rangers fans, the rumours and counter rumours over Steven Gerrard’s potential return have only added to the drama around the Glasgow based club. But there are a number of contenders still in the running if Gerrard and Rangers aren’t eventually reunited.
Those yearning for an appointment with historical Rangers links will be pleased to see Kevin Muscat’s name also under consideration. Although Muscat only spent one season at Rangers, where he played a total of 29 games, he was part of the 2002/03 team which secured the Scottish Premier League, Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup. As a manager, his credentials are yet to be tested at the highest level, with the majority of his time being spent in the Australian, Japanese and Chinese leagues.
Another ex-Rangers man on the list of potential replacements is Derek McInnes. McInnes has really hit the ground running since taking over at Hearts in May, and so the Edinburgh-based club would undoubtedly be reluctant to see him depart so soon. They are currently two points clear in the Scottish Premiership, as they go in search of what would be their first league title since way back in 1960.
The odds on Rangers turning to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer have also significantly shortened, after Paul Scholes broadly hinted that his former Man United teammate was in talks about the role. Speaking on the Good Bad Football podcast, Scholes said, “I was actually with a lad the other night who told me he was actually going to meet Rangers. I’m not sure if he did, but his name’s not been mentioned. I don’t think he was going for it. They contacted him and he was going to meet him in London the day after.”
The Norwegian’s odds had been as big as 33/1 earlier on Monday, but they now sit at 11/1 after punters pieced together who Scholes was referring to.
