Next Rangers Manager Odds: Dyche no longer favourite

Former Everton manager Sean Dyche is no longer favourite to take over at Ibrox after the decision was finally taken to relieve Russell Martin of his duties. Although Martin was only appointed in the summer, the pressure has been building for weeks, and evidently, the failure to beat Falkirk was seen as the straw that broke the camel’s back.

Ahead of Russell Martin’s departure, it had been Sean Dyche who was the favourite to take charge. The appointment appeared logical, given how Dyche has previously worked with Sporting Director Kevin Thelwell in his time at Everton. Together, they navigated financial challenges and points deductions at Goodison Park, but new betting sites like Betano have now pushed Dyche down into second place in their Rangers manager betting odds.

Instead, it’s former manager Steven Gerrard who is the new favourite to return to his former role. Gerrard performed well in his previous stint at Ibrox, leading the team to the Scottish Premiership title in 2020/21, and would be a cheap appointment too, having been without a job since leaving Al-Ettifaq in January. Gerrard’s odds had been hovering around 3/1 before Martin’s sacking, but he is now no bigger than 2/1 to take charge, with the upcoming international break providing the perfect opportunity for the club to reset and move in a new direction.

Who are the favourites to be next Rangers manager?

Steven Gerrard and Sean Dyche may continue to head the betting to become the next Rangers manager, but there are other contenders also being considered.

After the top two comes Danny Rohl. The 36-year-old German impressed at Sheffield Wednesday under trying circumstances and would be seen as a more progressive appointment than the likes of Sean Dyche.

For those yearning for an appointment with historical Rangers links, Kevin Muscat and Derek McInnes are seen as the most likely candidates. McInnes has really hit the ground running since taking over at Hearts in May, and so the Edinburgh based club would undoubtedly be reluctant to see him depart so soon. They are currently two points clear in the Scottish Premiership, as they go in search of what would be their first league title since way back in 1960.

Why was Russell Martin sacked?

Despite only being appointed as Rangers’ manager in June, it was little surprise to see Russell Martin under pressure so soon. They may have advanced to the Scottish League Cup semi-finals, but results have been dire both domestically and in Europe so far.

Although Rangers navigated their way past Panathinaikos and Viktoria Plzen, an ignominious exit at the hands of Club Brugge followed, 9-1 on aggregate. League results have been no better, with their draw at Falkirk leaving them down in 8th place, 11 points behind league leaders Hearts, and with a return to the Champions League next season already appearing unlikely.
