Next Rangers Manager odds: Ex-Rangers man now heads the betting

Kevin Muscat is the new favourite to be appointed as the next Rangers manager, after Steven Gerrard decided against making a return to Ibrox. The odds for Gerrard to be reappointed at Rangers had shortened to 1/8, but he ultimately decided the time wasn’t right. This leaves the Rangers board looking at alternatives, as their quest to replace Russell Martin before the end of the international break rumbles on.

Ahead of Russell Martin’s departure, it had been Gerrard and Sean Dyche who were the favourites to take charge. Dyche’s appointment appeared logical, given he previously worked with Sporting Director Kevin Thelwell in his time at Everton. Together, they navigated financial challenges and points deductions at Goodison Park, but UK betting sites like Betano have now pushed Dyche’s odds down to 20/1 in their Rangers manager betting odds.

The new week started with former Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl as the odds-on favourite with betting sites. The 36-year-old German impressed at Sheffield Wednesday under trying circumstances and would be seen as a more progressive appointment than the likes of Sean Dyche.

However, Kevin Muscat has now usurped his rivals at the head of the betting.

Who are the favourites to be next Rangers manager?

Those yearning for an appointment with historical Rangers links will be pleased to see Kevin Muscat’s name under consideration. Although Muscat only spent one season at Rangers, where he played a total of 29 games, he was part of the 2002/03 team which secured the Scottish Premier League, Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup. As a manager, his credentials are yet to be tested at the highest level, with the majority of his time being spent in the Australian, Japanese and Chinese leagues.

Another ex-Rangers man on the list of potential replacements is Derek McInnes. McInnes has really hit the ground running since taking over at Hearts in May, and so the Edinburgh-based club would undoubtedly be reluctant to see him depart so soon. They are currently two points clear in the Scottish Premiership, as they go in search of what would be their first league title since way back in 1960.

The odds on Rangers turning to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer have also significantly shortened, after Paul Scholes broadly hinted that his former Man United teammate was in talks about the role. Speaking on the Good Bad Football podcast, Scholes said, “I was actually with a lad the other night who told me he was actually going to meet Rangers. I’m not sure if he did, but his name’s not been mentioned. I don’t think he was going for it. They contacted him and he was going to meet him in London the day after.”

The Norwegian’s odds had been as big as 33/1 earlier on Monday, but they have now been cut to just 9/2, as punters pieced together who Scholes was referring to.

Why was Russell Martin sacked?

Despite only being appointed as Rangers’ manager in June, it was little surprise to see Russell Martin under pressure so soon. They may have advanced to the Scottish League Cup semi-finals, but results have been dire both domestically and in Europe so far.

Although Rangers navigated their way past Panathinaikos and Viktoria Plzen, an ignominious exit at the hands of Club Brugge followed, 9-1 on aggregate. League results have been no better, with their draw at Falkirk leaving them down in 8th place, 11 points behind league leaders Hearts, and with a return to the Champions League next season already appearing unlikely.
