Next Rangers Manager Odds: Thelwell reunion on the cards

Former Everton manager Sean Dyche remains favourite to take over at Ibrox after Rangers’ Scottish League Cup quarter-final win did little to reduce the pressure that has built on Russell Martin.

Rangers’ 2-0 victory over Hibernian was their first win since beating Alloa in mid-August, but it was off-the-field actions that took centre stage. Over 1,000 supporters outside Ibrox, unhappy at how the situation has developed since Martin took charge in the summer, chanted against him and chief executive Patrick Stewart. The protests continued inside the ground too, as ‘Martin Out’ and ‘Stewart Out’ banners were displayed in the stands, before play was temporarily stopped in the 11th minute after hundreds of coloured balls were thrown onto the pitch.

If Martin, and indeed Stewart, were to depart, the likelihood is that Sporting Director Kevin Thelwell would stay on and potentially be tasked with finding a replacement. Given how Thelwell and Dyche overcame financial difficulties and points penalties in their time at Goodison Park together, it is little surprise to see Dyche favourite with new betting sites like Betano and talkSPORT BET to be appointed as the next manager at Rangers.

Who are the favourites to be next Rangers manager?

While Sean Dyche heads the next Rangers manager odds, former boss Steven Gerrard is also prominent in the latest betting. He performed well in his previous stint at Ibrox, leading the team to the Scottish Premiership title in 2020/21, and would be a cheap appointment too, having been without a job since leaving Al-Ettifaq in January.

After Dyche and Gerrard in the Rangers manager betting comes Danny Rohl. The 36-year-old German impressed at Sheffield Wednesday under trying circumstances and would be seen as a more progressive appointment than the likes of Sean Dyche. Former Bournemouth and Wolves manager Gary O’Neil is next in the betting, with Nuno Espirito Santo also prominent despite being very closely linked with the West Ham manager position.

For those yearning for an appointment with historical Rangers links, Barry Ferguson is seen as the most likely candidate. Ferguson won five league titles as a Rangers player and also stepped in as interim manager following the departure of Philippe Clement, although his managerial experience at the top level is far more limited than the other contenders.

Why is Russell Martin under pressure?

Despite only being appointed as Rangers’ manager in June, it is little surprise to see Russell Martin already under a huge amount of pressure. They may have advanced to the Scottish League Cup semi-finals at the weekend, but results have been dire both domestically and in Europe so far.

Also Rangers navigated their way past Panathinaikos and Viktoria Plzen, an ignominious exit at the hands of Club Brugge followed, 9-1 on aggregate. League results have been no better, failing to win in five games, leaving them down in 11th place, already nine points off the top two, and with a return to the Champions League next season already appearing highly unlikely.
