Royal Ascot day 1 predictions & tips
Day one of Royal Ascot 2025 takes place on Tuesday and there are three Group 1s and a Group 2 on a fantastic afternoon.
The card features this season’s star miler Field Of Gold, who bids to get revenge over his old foe Ruling Court, who looked fortunate to beat him in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket. We’ve got a trio of selections, including one in the feature race, one in the opener, and another in the Wolferton Stakes.
2.30pm – Queen Anne Stakes
Royal Ascot kicks off with the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes, and the first four in the market finished in the first four places in the Lockinge at Newbury. However, that might not work out the right line of form and preference is for the lightly raced Sardinian Warrior.
The John and Thady Gosden-trained colt has run only six times at the age of four and is going forward rapidly. He beat Docklands over course and distance in the trial for this race and produced an even better effort in defeat when second in a Group 1 in France last time.
Sardinian Warrior travelled like the best horse in that Prix d’Ispahan over 1m1/12f, but was run down by Sosie in the closing stages. That was no disgrace as the winner is a multiple Group 1 winner who stays a lot further and the selection probably didn’t quite get home.
He drops back to a mile here at a course that he clearly likes and is open to loads of further improvement for a yard that doesn’t run horses at the top level unless they are up to it.
Christophe Soumillon takes the ride and Sardinian Warrior has an outstanding chance.

4.20pm – St James’s Palace Stakes
The other Group 1 over a mile on the card is the St James’s Palace Stakes (4.20) and it’s worth taking on Field Of Gold with impressive French 2,000 Guineas winner Henri Matisse.
The Aidan O’Brien-trained three-year-old has produced a remarkable turn of foot on several occasions and that was evident again at Longchamp, when he cut down the prominently ridden Jonquil to win by a head, with the front two pulling nicely clear of the remainder.
That form looks strong because the third-placed Camille Pisarro won the French Derby next time and several of those behind Henri Matisse were also among the principals at Chantilly.
Henri Matisse is 6-8 and unbeaten in two starts over a mile, so should have a lot more to offer at this distance for the O’Brien stable that has won this race an impressive nine times

5.35pm – Wolferton Stakes
The Wolferton Stakes (5.35) looks like a good opportunity for the class-dropping Sons And Lovers, who was beaten only three lengths by Group 1 winner Los Angeles on his last start.
Sons And Lovers was behind another top-class performer in White Birch, who was second in that Group 2, and should therefore find this drop into Listed company a lot more suitable.
Joseph O’Brien has taken no chances with the jockey booking and has convinced Ryan Moore to ride.
Moore has ridden only eight horses for the O’Brien stable in the last five seasons, but two of them won, one was second and another two fourth.
That is enough to convince me that connections mean business and that Sons Of Lovers can outclass these.
