Michael Carrick’s tenure as Manchester United’s manager looks increasingly precarious after another damaging result. United suffered a 4-1 defeat in Como, to leave them 20th in the Champions League table and in danger of failing to reach the lucrative knockout stages.
As if to add fire to the flames, captain Bruno Fernandes placed the blame for United’s latest loss squarely on Carrick, stating, “Was that tactical idea what cost Man Utd in Como? “That’s on the manager and on the staff to see it, it’s not on me”

Howe leads race to replace Carrick
Eddie Howe is the clear favourite, a position he’s held consistently through October as United’s results have worsened. United’s hierarchy are said to rate him for his Premier League pedigree, his pressing style, and the experience of taking Newcastle into the Champions League, a run that showed he could build something lasting on a budget well short of the traditional “big six.”
Julian Nagelsmann sits second, offering the continental, more progressive alternative to Howe’s English top-flight experience. He’s managed at the very top already, winning the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich, and his current post with the Germany national team means he’d arrive with no club commitments standing in the way if United came calling.
Fabian Hurzeler and Antonio Conte come next in the Manchester United manager betting. Conte brings a Premier League title with Chelsea and further silverware at Juventus and Inter, the kind of track record that speaks for itself regardless of the project he inherits. Hurzeler is the younger, more progressive option of the pair, currently working wonders and turning heads for his achievements at Brighton, where he’s shown he can get a mid-table squad playing well above its station. Whichever direction United go, the choice looks like a straight one between proven pedigree and the next big thing.
